The 8th Annual Scott Smed Invitational Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday, September 15, 2008 at the Cottonwood Golf and Country Club.

Every year, this tournament brings golfers, sponsors, volunteers and donors together for a day celebrating the gifts of life, love, friendship and family. Since 2001, the tournament has raised $317,000 and impacted the lives of thousands of Calgarians who have experienced the loss of a child.

This year we expect to raise over $60,000 of which $40,000 will be distributed to the Pregnancy & Infant Loss Program by the Calgary Health Trust and the balance to go to United Way in support of babies’ orphanages in Uganda.

Today there are Scott Smed rooms at Rockyview General Hospital and Foothills Medical Centre, as well as another under construction at the Peter Lougheed Centre. A Centre of Excellence is planned for the South Health Campus, which will consist of four patient rooms, a family room, infant care room, fully equipped resource centre, on site counselling services and a team of professionally trained doctors and nurses knowledgeable in infant loss and bereavement. It will be the first of its kind in Canada and will provide Southern Albertans with the very best care possible when experiencing the loss of a baby.

We have also expanded the reach of the Scott Smed Memorial to include two babies orphanages in Uganda, where we can help provide orphaned and abandoned children with hope for a new - and better – life. For our family, it is like coming full circle as our daughter is of Ugandan descent.

We are thrilled to honour Scott’s memory with such a wonderful legacy of hope but we have not – and cannot – do it alone. This extraordinary day of golf happens because of sponsors who provide generous financial support, enabling us to maximize the amount of money raised every year.
